Fifty-eight years..........

On this day, 31st March, 1951 my parents were married.

Thank you Dad and Mum for those wonderful years. Years through which you have truly lived your vows, to love and to cherish, to have and to hold, through good times and in bad, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, with all my worldly goods I thee endow, until death do us part.

How I thank God for bringing you together and for placing me among your children.

Today Dad and Mum celebrate with a wonderful heritage to look back over. Blessed with eight children, one passed away in childhood and seven married. Twenty two grandchildren. and to make it very special, today a little boy born, their eighteenth great grandchild with another due in a couple of weeks.

May the Lord bless and keep you and make his face to shine upon you.

Edit: 2010.
Mum and Dad still going strong!
Great Grandchildren number twenty two and twenty three are expected later this year!

Generation Cedar: Virtuous Wife: A Ruby Rebel

Generation Cedar: Virtuous Wife: A Ruby Rebel

He must increase....

The series our Pastor has been doing on the Beatitudes has been both very uplifting - realising the amazing characteristics the Lord bestows on believers and the promised blessings which accompany them - and convicting - realising how far short I fall in my daily life and the great privilege to be so abundantly blessed.. Praise and thanks to the Lord that we are accepted through Christ who bore all these qualities, untainted by sin.

Years ago I heard a message on Matthew 5 using the catchy phrase "Beatitudes - beautiful attitudes " and so they are beautiful qualities in the believer. But it has been pointed out that Beatitude means "blessing" and this has taken my understanding from a man centered, me centered, striving for perfection and focused me squarely on God from whom these qualities flow. I continually need to shift the focus from self to God. "He must increase..." All of the qualities described in Matthew chapter 5 are graciously bestowed on the believed when converted and developed in us as we draw near to God and grow in grace. The blessings promised each hold an earthly aspect and an eternal.

As we considered yesterday "he shall see God" it affected me deeply the blessing to have a glimpse of God in this life and to envision the glory which we will see when our pilgrimage is done and we spend eternity serving and enjoying God forever.

What a wonderful focus to go into this week!

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

Blog till you drop!

Well, I'm actually not such a party animal. I did get to check in on some wonderful blogs and had a few lovely visitors myself. I have added a number to my reader so I hope the next couple of weeks don't get too hectic. I guess I will keep up with a few until I can discern which will be edifying to read regularly.
One positive for me doing the Ultimate Blog Party was experiencing the lovely spirit both in the party goers and in the content of the blogs I visited for the first time. This salvaged a little of my jaded opinion of the tone in the christian blogging world!
And guess what?! I actually won a book prize! Very exciting!

A couple of ladies I read regularly already have expressed a need to bow out of blogging to some degree. For me this week has come at a good time. I am new enough to be rapt in this new activity, which has quickly become like a new hobby. I was already questioning not only the content but even more so the time involved with it. Home making, home schooling and all that it involves is a full time job! But thankfully, all these things have come together to help me formulate a strategy! I am definitely trying to schedule my internet time, and aiming to have at least one day a week completely off it as well as the Lord's Day.
This might take a little discipline at first, as for many years now I have grabbed my cup of coffee at morning tea time and checked my emails. Even before I discovered blogging.

"See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time because the days are evil." Ephesians 5: 15,16

The Tangled Web We Weave

The Uses and Abuses of the World Wide Web

Though I have found many sites on the internet interesting for years now, I have only recently got into blogging which has led me to check out many blogs I have thought might be of interest. Truly, there is so much good and edifying information and real life experience to be shared and read on the net,as well as good access to writers of the past, that one must acknowledge this has been a wonderful modern advance.

My main interests lie in growing in grace, in educating my children, both in the things of God and academically, and in learning all I can towards becoming a woman of wisdom. I am constantly reminding myself that people we come across through the internet are flesh and blood and I must discern my associations as I would with the people I meet in my real life. You hear so many horror stories of internet relationships and we warn our children of the rights and wrongs of dealing with people in this arena.

In my real life friendships, I seek out women who are heading towards the same goals, the same high calling. I esteem women who exemplify the woman of Proverbs 31 and who behave as Godly aged women as per Titus 2. I tend to be careful of those who do not take heed of the the ninth commandment and gossip about others. As a keeper at home I aim to focus on my husband, children and family, not going from house to house, but seeking also to extend a hand to those in need as I am able and enjoying the blessing of a wide circle of friends.

Many of the sites I frequent support and encourage all these qualities which I value and wish to emulate . Some are more theological, some more towards education. Now with my own blog, even one which is not widely read, I am very conscience of the responsibility we hold as Christians, to glorify God, to be above reproach in what we write. If I am writing about trivial family doings I tend to jot it down and publish it quickly but my resolution is to draft anything which could be seen as inaccurate, doctrinally suspicious or perceived as gossip and hurtful to anyone in any way.

I have sadly read some very poisonous posts over the past couple of months. Scripture tells us to esteem one another better than ourselves. I do not think it is my responsibility to investigate every minute accusation about another believer, preferring to take a person at face value, in what they have written, as I would in a real situation.
There is no doubt that there will be deceivers, false teachers and those who abuse the tenderness of the christian community in general, who will creep in and do their best to cause disruption. In this case we do need Godly leaders who will speak up to point out their deception. There must though, be an observance of biblical practice, to seek out the offender, to seek repentance and restoration before taking it to the church. This blackening the name of others across the internet and therefore across the world, under the pretense of exposing them, only brings shame and sorrow on the people who profess the name of Christ and condemnation before an eagerly watching world.

Too many modern Christians seem to be going off on a tangent and leaving the established and orthodox churches over minors that they are majoring on and so leaving the oversight of the local elders, who should deal with these sorts of sins. The internet has not and never will replace the God ordained order of the local assembly. Not in preaching, teaching, discipling or disciplining. I can read many wonderful articles and be truly touched by the testimony and teaching of a Godly older woman with an edifying website, and I have been. It will not, can not, replace the loving example of the women God has placed in my own congregation and circle of acquaintance. The ones who see you struggle with little ones, lack of sleep, a difficult husband, a besetting sin. The ones who love you enough and esteem themselves so little that they will venture to draw a bad attitude or a wrong behaviour to your notice.

We can say pretty much as we like on the internet with only our consciences and good sense, perhaps our spouse to restrain us. Some use this as an excuse to let their little fire, their tongue, run free using the keyboard in its place.

And what of our witness now and down the corridor of time? Will what I have written today one day come back to haunt me at a future date. Have I hurt a brother or sister in what I have said? Harmed their reputation, belittled their beliefs? Have I placed a stumbling block before someone or caused a precious little one to stumble? Have I been a true witness for the Lord Jesus Christ? Have I sought the kingdom of heaven, the good of my neighbour the good name of myself and others?

Get wisdom! Get understanding!
Wisdom is the principal thing!

A godly minister was asked why he had not published a book yet though he has extensive writings and preaches so powerfully. I liked his answer (and I seem to remember he quoted it from some other well known preacher of the past). He did not want to get to old age and have to retract all he had written.! This was not said by one who was airy fairy in doctrine and undecided, but one who knew the great responsibility he bore in declaring what the Lord says.

"She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and on her tongue is the law of kindness." Proverbs 31:26

"The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things:" Titus 2:3

Attention Party Goers!

Greetings!

Readin', Writin' and Cookin'!

Corn Fritters in the pan

And golden brown on the plate.

YUM!

My good friend JJ knew I was really struggling to keep up my enthusiasm for schooling, with the boys struggling in their work, especially reading, and she wanted to to help in some way. Now, this dear lady did not home school, but has home educated grand children and has become very supportive of it over the years.

So she suggested a way to encourage the boys, get them reading and writing, spend a bit of time with them and give me a bit of a break.

(Also, we get a little time together on a regular basis!)

She does a little cooking session with them once a fortnight. They have to choose and write out the recipe, get the ingredients, then on the day she supervises the cooking.

Today we enjoyed these Corn Fritters for lunch afterwards!

The boys are quite handy and helpful in the kitchen at home but this is a special little exercise and all of us love it!

Blessed are the Pure in Heart

Matthew 5: 8 "Blessed are pure in heart, for they shall see God."

Another of the beautiful beatitudes (blessings) promised to those whom God has called to be his own. Purity of heart is a God-given quality which is bestowed upon the believer and not found in the natural heart. The scripture tells us that the heart of man is desperately wicked. In Genesis 6:5 we are told that before the flood "..the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of the his heart was only evil continually." and so is the sorry state of the human heart.

Praise God! The Holy Spirit converts and enables believers to have a pure heart toward God. As we battle our ongoing struggle to be holy as God is holy we cry with the Psalmist , "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me." Psalm 51:10.

Psalm 24 is a majestic psalm of praise to our God and verses 3 and 4 speak of the man who shall ascend in to the hill of God, and stand in his holy place.

.
PSALM 24

The earth belongs unto the Lord,
and all that it contains;
The world that is inhabited,
and all that there remains.
For the foundations thereof
he on the seas did lay,
And he hath it established
upon the floods to stay.

Who is the man that shall ascend
into the hill of God?
Or who within his holy place
shall have a firm abode?
Whose hands are clean, whose heart is pure,
and unto vanity
Who hath not lifted up his soul,
nor sworn deceitfully.

He from th' Eternal shall receive
the blessing him upon,
And righteousness, ev'n from the God
of his salvation.
This is the generation
that after him enquire,
O Jacob, who do seek thy face
with their whole heart's desire.

Ye gates, lift up your heads on high,
ye doors that last for aye,
Be lifted up, that so the King
of glory enter may.
But who of glory is the King?
The mighty Lord is this;
Ev'n that same Lord, that great in might
and strong in battle is.

Ye gates, lift up your heads; ye doors,
doors that do last for aye,
Be lifted up, that so the King
of glory enter may.
But who is he that is the King
of glory? who is this?
the Lord of hosts, and none but he,
the King of glory is.
.

The Ultimate Blog Party

This is a novel idea for this newish blogger but it looks like fun!
For anyone calling in on my blog through the party - WELCOME!

I am a stay at home wife and mother of four, with two young grandsons. I am a christian, and home schooling the two sons still living at home, with two adult daughters who have also been home schooled. I love all things to do with our christian walk, education, Australian history and poetry, sometime scrap booker, Family is my big love and interest, including family history and heritage which I have dabbled into but plan to more as time allows.
Friends and the wider circle of our church and local community are next priority. I am very involved with the local home school support group.

If you are not familiar with Australia, click on some of my pictures in the side bar to see the wonder of Down Under. Please leave me a comment so I know you've stopped by.

Coffee and Comfort

Last night I enjoyed the ladies' company at our once a term Mother's Night Out. Our home schooling support group schedules these four times a year and although we see one another regularly for children's activities it is always a bit of a high light.
It is a time when new and old can meet together and relax and if there are problems the mums want to discuss, they are sure to get encouragement and advice from some one who has dealt with a similar situation.
I commented last night that in all the years we've been doing this, there have been relatively few major problems, and though some families do drop out for many reasons, including "burnout", most have hung in and we can generally help one another as we go along.

I was also saying that after so many years teaching children at home I am finding it hard to cope with the ongoing trials of the learning difficulties my boys are experiencing, feeling a little flat and lacking the enthusiasm I once had for all things educational. I came home uplifted by the encouragement of these precious sisters but especially by one's thoughtful words, She said that in the end God will say to us, Well done thou good and faithful servant
.
Success is not my yardstick! To be faithful, consistant, committed. I knew this but what a blessing to be reminded.

The Ties Have It

Looking through some church photographs today, one of several Ministers and Elders, reminded me of a lesson with my eldest daughter when she was learning to read.

There were several pictures that she had to describe and one was of ten conservative looking men in ties.

"That's a picture of ten elders" she exclaimed confidently!

Little Women, Great Mothers

Remember the warm glow that came over you when you first held your new baby? The feeling that your heart would burst. The feeling that no one was ever quite so clever, and no baby was ever quite so beautiful as this one of yours?

When I set eyes on my first grandchild, I was over-awed by this same emotion. Except this time there was my baby gazing with glazed and adoring eyes at her own little miracle! So when I became a granny the second time round I was more prepred but not any less amazed. God has blessed us with this precious gift, to bare and raise children, and given us this marvellous, powerful love to help us to get through the rough patches when they come.

Today, as so many times in the months of the lives of these little ones, I have been thanking God for the blessing they are to us. Their mothers, my daughters, are not walking with the Lord and this is a great heartbreak to me. Praise God for his comfort and Word to us. I can continue to encourage, be an example and gently rebuke my children even as adults, praying for their salvation. But I can also say, Lord, I bring them before you and trust them to you. And what is more, I can still be an influence for good in the lives of the next generation.

Mostly today, I have been marvelling at the beautiful mothers my daughters have become. They are so tender and responsive, yet organised and so much more confident than I ever remember being. We see a lot of all of them and both girls make a special effort to spend time with their brothers and keep building on their relationships with them, though they have not lived in the same home for some time. They both have the boys over when I need to go to appointments and meetings or just for together time. Best of all I think, they ensure that their brothers are having lots of hands on time with their nephews. This gives the little men experiences they might miss at the end of a family. It gives them responsibility and a need to rise in maturity. It also gives the mums a break occasionally which is much appreciated, and hopefully will lead to the babies having good role models to look up to.

My own mother is a great inspiration to me and a wonderful example of devotion and self sacrifice. I believe her mother was before her though I barely remember her. My paternal grandmother though I knew well and was very close to as a young woman. She was a true pioneering woman of the Australian bush and I spent a lot of time listening and learning at her knees. Having educated my children at home has meant we also have cemented a solid relationship and enjoy friendship as well as a mother/daughter relationship. I am miffed, but actually very pleased :o), at how little my daughters need me! I pray to continue, by God's grace to be a role model to them.

Today, I am just enjoying their lovely company and the delightful grandchildren they have given me!

A Good Conscience

"A good conscience is a soft pillow."

This proverb was mentioned at our mid-week meeting last night and I thought it so -well...so proverbial !- that it must have been biblical. Apparently not. According to Google, an English proverb of unknown origin. Cited in literature. Also used similarly in many other languages.
.
"It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep." Psalm 127:2
.
"And herein do I exercise myself, to have a good conscience towards God, and toward men." Acts24:16
.
"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear;
Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ." 1 Peter 3:15,16

Straightening out those lines!

My own comment yesterday, that I am not really a straight lines type of person got me thinking about that statement and my own character.

In most things, I like a casual, thrown together look and feel. When I first discovered scrap booking I had a marvellous time putting together pages in this fashion. But over time, as I observed my friends scrapbooks, I noticed how much easier it was to look through the ones that had neat straight lines and co-ordinated colours and pages. The same goes for house decor, though finances play a part here as well. I have always put together second hand bits and pieces of furniture, with random colours that go together but not always so well co-ordinated. I think it is something one is born with, a flair for creativity and design. If one has to learn it, it comes with great difficultly and I often prefer to get help from ladies I know shine in this area.

In mothering and schooling I think I am naturally the same way inclined. Preferring a spontaneous approach to meeting the needs of little ones and enjoying the times that school works drifts into a "delight directed" lesson.

But here's the rub. As a young mum, and when I had the four doing school, things tended to get just a little out of hand!! I began to see that "decently and in order" and "line upon line" were more likely to aid me in creating the warm, happy and above all God fearing home, I longed for. As I observed the women in my life who I esteemed to have things much more together, I began to order my thoughts also. (I must add that my own mum was a very organised mother of many, who raised us in the days without electricity and modern time saving devises. I am truly blessed to have such an example to draw from.)
Now I confess, my housekeeping still leaves much to be desired, but I know that orderliness in other areas has saved me from a great deal of stress and unnecessary tension. Now we do the lists! Shopping, menus, chores, budgets, school work- both academic and other related activities. Regular times for private, family and church worship. We have the whole family schedule on a large white board in the dining room (some times I suspect I am the only ones to refer to it!) We have the regular visits to the Grands (still do the spontaeous ones) and they appreciate knowing we are coming at set times.
I know I will not ever be the pin up girl for domestic perfection! Relationships are still my main priority. Putting God first in all things. Caring for my family and being the heart of my home, opening our doors in hospitality. As I straighten out the lines of my mind I feel more able to do these things. I want my home to be a place where people live, people learn, people love and people laugh.
The last couple of weeks I have not felt so well and the disorganisation thing has risen up to haunt me - thus the pondering on these things. A little self motivation!!

"Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord JEHOVAH is my strength and my song: he also is become my salvation." Isaiah 12:2

"He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the Lord." Psalm 113: 9

"She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness." Proverbs 31:27

Changes at Mumma's Place

Tonight I got the urge to try something different and changed the template of my blog. I'm not such a straight lines person, so I don't know how long this will last. But it is only a surface change so don't stop coming by!
I was startled when I changed a few things that I had over 100 looks at my profile.
Blessings to all who might check out this blog.

Blessed are the Merciful

I joyed to go up to the house of the Lord this Sabbath! It is amazing when one has had a short illness the blessing to once again worship the Lord with His people. I find as time goes on how I appreciate more and more the little group of like minded believes that God has put together in this place. I miss their fellowship and love when I or one of them is absent for some reason.

It was encouraging and refreshing also to take up the thoughts of Matthew chapter 5.

"Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy."

Once again Pastor looked at the Beatitude under the headings 1. The quality 2. The blessing promised

The characteristic, as the ones before, is God given, and not one found naturally in us. Proverbs 12:10 tells us that "...the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." It is usually some self centred or wrongly directed act.

The mercy we show as believers should be in appreciation and acknowledgment of the mercy shown to us in Christ. In him justice and mercy kiss. We should show and practice mercy among the brethren and look for ways to help meet the needs of God's people. This is an area often sadly lacking. And what is our motivation when we do seek to help others? Do we do "good works" in order to gain something and expect the same in return? Or are we like our Lord and Saviour, who willingly gave, even unto death, to us - undeserving though we are? I am always ashamed when I see how far short I fall in following and conforming to Christ.

But even more convicting - do we show mercy to the ungodly? Perhaps we give to the needy to care for their bodies in times of sickness, distress, poverty. But do we reach out to the SOULS of those around us? This is the greatest challenge to me at the moment. To long to see souls saved should be our great desire. To be so thankful to the Lord for what he has done for me that I would rejoice and proclaim it to all the lost I come in contact with.

Pastor made the good and lamentable point that as Christians who are called "Calvinists" we are often (wrongly?)thought to be loveless and not interested in seeing the gospel spread. How this should fire us up to show the world the message of the gospel. To praise God for what he has done and share the good news with needy people.

As a stay at home mother and wife my own opportunities to share my faith have perhaps been narrow. But the seasons of life change and as my children grow to adulthood so my sphere widens. The challenge for me is to be merciful to those I come across, to not be ashamed of the gospel of Christ and to truly love them enough to long to see them turn to the Lord and be my neighbours one day also in glory. And while I have children who do not profess faith in Christ I have a burning commitment to continue in sharing Christ with them It is a desire I have, yet often feel inadequate in doing. Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner.

"For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;" Titus 3: 3-5

Our baby turns ten!

How the years fly. My baby is ten years old today!!

He was my fifth birth and all were premmies. I had been hospitalised at 32 weeks with my usual pre eclampsia. Thumping head, high blood pressure, passing lots of protein, severe oedema. The idea being to get as far along as possible. On Sunday, 14th March, (34 weeks) about 6am I had a show and almost immediately went into labour which sent the staff, about to go off night duty, into a tail spin. (I had a very large, drama filled medical file and almost every complication imaginable in the past four pregnancies and births!) At about 9.30am he was born by emergency c-section - not breathing. Praise God a little oxygen and he started to cry.

What a blessing this boy has been to me and to our whole family. Yesterday we had a home schoolers get together at the local Botanic Gardens and then two of his friends (brothers) spent the afternoon with us, which included coming along to his basketball game at night and dinner with us.

Today, both big sisters and their families joined us for a birthday morning tea. This included his two gorgeous and oh-so-loved nephews. Both my sons are very good with the babies and blessed to be allowed lots of access by their big sisters! (The same big sisters who loved and cuddled and fussed over them!) Ten years is a small milestone. May the Lord richly bless you, my darling son and may you come to know Him and serve Him always.

Things I love about my S2: He's affectionate and cuddly. He has gorgeous chocolate brown eyes and unbelievalble long lashes! He almost always thanks me for cooking a meal. He sees the funny side of life and comes out with some classic one liners.! He's really good with younger children, especially his nephews.

Things we're working on: His domestic deafness! His reading and writing skills.

Happy Birthday to you!

Rose coloured glasses!

Okay. The truth is I am quite short, plump, double chinned, large bosomed, plain, pulled back hair, conservatively dressed. I often feel (and look) tired but I do have a merry heart! This was the precious observation of my darling 11 year old of my class reunion photo.
Son: "Mum, are you the youngest out of these school friends?"
Mum: "No. Not quite. One of the younger in my class. Why do you ask?"
Son: (Sincerely) "Well, you look a lot younger."
Mum: (Staggered!) "Really?! How do you mean."
Son: "All the other ladies have scraggly necks and their hair is all funny."

Go ahead! Make my day!

Battening down for Cyclone Hamish

Hamish - I always liked that name!
All weekend the Central Coast region of Queensland has been on high alert as Cyclone Hamish hurtled down parallel to the coastline. Although we are 30 kilometres off the coast and protected by mountains, we can still expect gale force winds and plenty of rain. The danger has not yet passed though the cyclone has been downgraded from 5 (highest) to 4 and slowly moving south east (seaward). All the coastal towns and the islands are battening down in preparation. This is a regular occurrence from December through to March. Mostly it is wind and rain but every few years a big one will devastate a town, like Larry wiped out Innisfail a couple of years ago. With the big ones also comes flooding.
2009 is only into the third month and we have already had a good share of disasters. Flood, fire and now cyclone. I was telling the children how fortunate we are not to live in an earthquake, volcano or tsunami region!

In other news:

My Father-in-law is recovering "as well as can be expected". He had an emergency gall stone operation last week and ended up in ICU after post op complications. After two days in an induced coma he is now conscious and all seems to be going well. Hubby hopes to travel down to see him soon. He'd have gone straight away if it looked like things were life threatening but now would prefer to visit when he is home recuperating.

I woke on Sunday morning with tummy pains and decided I couldn't trust myself to get through church. I had been running to the toilet since early morning. So, it was a quiet day. The boys had to fill me in on the next Beatitude - Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled. I can get a DVD of the sermons from yesterday so I will try to do that before the next one. When you are really gleaning a lot from the messages in a series it is a shame to miss one in the middle.

Preparing for a regular, busy week otherwise!

Psalm 73
Nevertheless, continually,
Oh Lord, I am with thee:
thou dost me hold by my right hand,
and still upholdest me.
Thou, with thy council, while I live,
wilt me conduct and guide;
and to thy glory afterward
receive me to abide.
Whom have I in the heavens high
but thee, O Lord, alone?
And in the earth whom I desire
besides thee there is none.
My flesh and heart doth faint and fail,
but God doth fail me never:
for of my heart God is the strength
and portion for ever.
For, lo, they that are far from thee
for ever perish shall;
Them that a whoring from thee go
thou hast destroyed all.
But surely it is good for me
That I draw near to God;
In God I trust that all thy works
I may declare abroad.
Psalm 73: 23-28 (Scottish Metrical Version)

Reunited!

Posting tonight after a very pleasant afternoon in Memory Lane!

My high school years were spent at a Catholic all girls boarding school. Today, some of those girls met for a 30 year reunion. I am really disappointed that I am having problems with my camera connections and it keeps saying I can't transfer my pictures. I was going to do some before and afters! Instead I have scanned on the photograph of our Boarders of my senior year.

We did not have an all of class reunion as none of us felt we had the time, energy or resources to track everyone, but we contacted as many as possible and depended on word of mouth among girls who had stayed in contact.

It was marvellous to catch up with different ones. So many old pranks to recount, characters to remember, teachers to imitate. So many years to fill in the gaps. Careers, marriages, children, divorces, grandchildren, illnesses, trials and triumphs.

Boarding school is a unique experience. The home sickness we endured was tempered by the friendships we made. And for those five years, these girls were like family. I missed my family terribly and the bush life, but I actually have enjoyable memories of my school days. Some of the girls did not feel that way but still valued the friendships forged during that time.

Some who have not seen me in the intervening years wondered that I had chosen to home school my own children when I was one who did enjoy my own school experience. (Also have fond memories of my primary school years in a little 2/3 teacher school in CQ) so that was an opportunity to tell them of my faith in Christ and new convictions. (One girl said, "But you always were a Christian." which is what I probably thought too when growing up as a Roman Catholic) Again a brief opportunity to speak of faith in Christ alone for salvation.

One sad thing, apart from myself and one other who has become a Christian, most of the others seem to be either completely anti-religion, or very nominal RC (not attending but kids go to RC schools) I just went along to catch up with the ones who were close friends then, and some I have stayed friendly with over the years. The ones with the foul mouths and too much enjoyment of alcohol were probably the ones I wasn't too friendly with any way.

One blessing is, that as far as we know, no one from our year has died yet.
The picture above is of "The Tower". This structure is now Heritage Listed and was part of the old Middle Hall (assembly area). The residence is still used as a boarding facility for the local co-ed Catholic school, but the Convent and school area are now part of a retirement village. Ironically, my parents who sent four daughters here, now live in a retirement unit right about where our old Science block used to stand!

The Boarders of the Class of '79!
Edit: It was 30 years since those of us who did Year 12 graduated. This is actually a photograph taken of us as Year 11 boarders. I used it as some of the girls left at the end of that year, including my bestie! These old girls were also included in our celebration.

A Tribute

I have a very special friend, a beloved sister in the Lord, who I esteem and value very highly. She is about ten years my senior and so is both a great friend and a great example to me. She has been a loving and submissive wife, who has shared and exemplified a godly christian marriage. She has nursed her husband through cancer and to his death. She has raised her family in the fear and nurture of the Lord and seen, not all, but most now adults, married and in a strong walk before God. She is a fabulous, committed and patient grandmother, adored by her grandkids. She is a wonderful home maker, cook, gardener and crafter, she looks well to the ways of her household and on her lips is the law of kindness. She gives her time freely to charity work. She blesses the congregation, especially the women with her wisdom, time, humour and the gentle way she accepts the Lord's will in her life.
My dear friend was diagnosed with breast cancer about a year ago. She has undergone surgery, chemotherapy and radium treatment. It has been a hard trial. She has had many dark days, but she has been an unfailing testimony to the strength which comes only from her faith in God and in his providence. The joy of the Lord is her strength.
Now, her one year results show that despite all of that, she may have further cancer in the same area.
Oh Lord! How difficult are the trials which are set before us. But your ways are not our ways and you do all things well!
Lord, bless her and keep her and make your light to shine upon her - for she is your servant and she trusts in you,.
I am thankful for the blessing of a friend such as this. May I have the grace to be a true friend to her in her time of need..

Finding a Balance

My mind has had plenty to ponder on with another two good messages yesterday, continuing the series in Matthew 5 and 1 John.
However, I have been contemplating most last weeks message, blessed are they that mourn. Some of the thoughts which Pastor presented have caused some discussion and several of us "heard" things differently. Pastor spoke of the fact that Jesus is not recorded in scripture as ever having laughed. That he was sober and greatly grieved over the sins of his people and the sinful world in which he dwelt. My understanding of this is that we are to be a sober people much in mourning over our sinful condition before God and always recalling the great sacrifice our Saviour has made on our behalf. I see so many places in scripture where we are told to be joyful and rejoice. Again, the joy spoken of is a fruit of the Spirit, an inward quality, not a natural characteristic but one we develop by grace. But, I also see the Scriptures speaking of a joyful mother of children,(Psalm 113:9) a merry heart,(Proverbs 15:13) laughter a good medicine (Proverbs 17:22) etc. I think this is a case of balance in our christian life.
Often "Calvinists" are labeled as loveless, frozen chosen etc and perhaps some have taken the admonitions to be grave and serious minded to the extent as to give this impression. We should find many of the worldly entertainments which others revel in to be abhorrent. But one can be serious minded about the things of God, deeply aware of our sinful condition and repentant before God yet still enjoy the simple and legitimate pleasures of this life. And that without guilt.
If we blatently ignore God and live in riotous and worldly pleasures, we can not claim to be mourning over our sin. As we conform ourselves more and more to the image of our Lord and Saviour we will develop that serious demenour.

"A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken."
Proverbs 15:13

"Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted." Matthew 5:4
