For the first time in a lot of years I did not attend the Anzac Day march this morning. Too long standing and walking for me at the moment. Most of the rest of the household turned out. I stayed here with the twins and sang them Advance Australia Fair and Waltzing Matilda, and other sustaining songs .
As always I have found the articles and clips moving today. A couple of new songs I had not heard before. Adam Brand ~ The Anzac and Ragged Bloody Heroes posted by Ann at Eight Acres of Eden. ( A Kiwi living in Oz)
I've written before of my grandfather here and here and my great love and admiration for him.. Strangely, although that rose-tinted view is still the way I remember my Grandad, in the last few months I have had much to mull over about his life and character. We knew him as a sage and often jolly old man, sitting in his cane chair on the veranda, smoking a pipe, telling a yarn, rousing on the nippers.
In the past few months as some of my cousins have met to organise our upcoming, "100 Years on the Block" celebrations, we have been able to talk about our memories. Also my Uncle who is putting together a book of Family History, my Dad, who is the oldest living member of the family, and my three aunts have all contributed and answered questions. Although they loved their parents dearly, my grandparents, they grew up in a generation which was much more rigid and austere. Where children were seen but not heard at the tea table, yes, even in the shanty in the bush. Where war, drought, flood, and the Great Depression cast a gloomy shadow over youthful exuberance and survival was the main priority in life.
My grandfather was a devoutly religious man and obviously he would tolerate no rebellion from his children, Some in the end left the farm either to join the army in WW2 or for other jobs. Some left on not the best of terms. Some of the nine stayed and loved the land all the days of their lives. To me, it seems that my Grandfather may have suffered much more emotionally and spiritually than the physical wounds of his battle scars showed. My heart aches for him, for my grandmother and the loneliness and toilsome heartache of her lonely bush life, trying to soothe the pain which gruesome, senseless warfare had inflicted on her husband. I ache for my father too, who it seems was able to speak very little to his father of sensitive things and finds it hard to relay the same to us his children.
Last weekend I attended the 21st birthday celebrations of one of my nephews. My brother spoke so lovingly and humorously in his speech to his son and finished simply with "I love you, son." Teary eyed, I told him afterwards how precious his words were and as we hugged he told me he had resolved to say that because, you know.................... He said no more, but I knew. In our fabulous family, through all that golden childhood which I hold so dear, there were some who never seemed to be able to say those precious words. I am so thankful that this generation is different. That we openly speak of our love, of our hurts and disappointments. That we encourage one another and stand by in support when the chips are down. Those things were always done but saying those three words can touch a person's heart in a way no other thing can. In generations past, love was expressed in the hard work and loyalty one showed and it was great love. Love in fact which was prepared to lay down their lives for us.
Lest we forget......

Shirley & Marcy
A mother was concerned about her kindergarten son, Timmy, walking to school.
He didn't want his mother to walk with him.
She wanted to give him the feeling that he had some independence but yet know that he was safe.
So she had an idea of how to handle it.
She asked a neighbour if she would please follow him to school in the mornings,
staying at a distance, so he probably wouldn't notice her.
The neighbour said that since she was up early with her toddler anyway, it would
be a good way for them to get some exercise as well, so she agreed.
The next school day, the neighbour and her little girl set out following behind Timmy
as he walked to school with another neighbour girl he knew.
She did this for the whole week.
As the two walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, Timmy 's little friend
noticed the same lady was following them as she seemed to do every day all week.
Finally she said to Timmy,
'Have you noticed that lady following us to school all week? Do you know her?'
Timmy nonchalantly replied, 'Yeah, I know who she is.'
The little girl said, 'Well, who is she?'
'That's just Shirley Goodnest ,' Timmy replied, 'and her daughter Marcy ...'
'Shirley Goodnest? Who is she and why is she following us?
'Well,' Timmy explained, 'every night my Mum makes me say the 23rd Psalm
with my prayers, 'cuz she worries about me so much.
And in the Psalm, it says, 'Shirley Goodnest (surely goodness) and Marcy (mercy)
shall follow me all the days of my life', so I guess I'll just have to get used to it!'
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be
gracious unto you; the Lord lift His countenance upon you, and give you peace.
May Shirley Goodnest and Marcy be with you today and always
A friend sent me this email today and I had such a good chuckle I thought I would share it here.

You've got a friend...
One of the ironies of blogging is that when you have a lot going on and plenty of fodder for blogging, you just don't have the time to sit and write it all down. Then when things quieten down your head is devoid of anything interesting to say. Such is life!
We started back to school today. I felt ready but I think my boys still have some sleep deprivation after their week long holiday. They were not so enthusiastic! My hubby and the boys had the second week in Brisbane visiting family and friends. It made the house a little quieter, less cooking, less washing, but we still had a busy time here.
The twins are walking!! clapping, and generally into everything! My youngest little grandson is crawling as well. All three babies cut their first teeth last week. Oh! they are just so clever! The littlest man is quite sick at the moment and had an emergency run to the hospital yesterday with a seriously high temp. He gave my daughter quiet a scare as his breathing suddenly became so shallow and he was going blue. He is still miserable and hot, but it seems to be under control. That daughter, his mother, gave us a few big frights when she was little. She would spike a high temp from nowhere and then start convulsing. They were very scary days!

Thy God is a Jealous God
Psalm 22
6But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
7All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
13They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
15My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
18They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
27All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
This past weekend, when Easter was celebrated by many Christians, one of Queensland's largest news paper, The Courier Mail, ran a cartoon which not only angered but also saddened my heart.
In my "righteous anger" I tossed it away which I regret now as I can not quote directly from the words. The principle is the same never the less.
The cartoon showed Jesus, with the two thieves beside him, hanging from the cross. In front stood a Roman soldier telling the on lookers to clear out, in another week or two this will all be forgotten.
Silly cartoonist. Whether he was expressing contempt at the insignificance of Jesus death or the opposite, saying here we are 2.000 years later still remembering it, I find it deeply hurtful and dishonouring to our Lord and Saviour who humbled himself to come into this world as a man, who lived among us, his lowly creation, who endured the miseries of this life and death itself for the sake of his people. to be caricatured and mocked in this so-called Christian country.
No one who stood around the cross that day, nor indeed in the whole of Jerusalem would have ever forgotten that amazing afternoon when the sky was darkened, the graves of the dead were opened and the veil of the temple was torn in two. It is finished.....
He is risen! and he is coming again to judge the living and the dead. Then will every knee bow and he shall be recognised and acknowledged by all. What a dreadful day for those who mock and despise Him still.
In our country we enjoy Freedom of Religion. We support this because, even though we believe that all other religions and gods are false we respect a person's right to worship as they choose. Where is this respect for the believers in Christ? If the symbols and gods of Islam, Hindu, Buddhism are insulted their vocal, devout followers raise strong objections.
We are Christians. We turn the other cheek, We forgive. But the Lord our God is a jealous God. He will have no other gods before Him. He is righteous, just and holy. We must protect our right to worship the one true God and we must be zealous for His Name, his Word, His worship. God is not mocked , he is a consuming fire!
To add to my angst, a few pages over the Cross, that Christian symbol so well recognised, once again featured in a comic strip. This time Julia Gillard was hanging on it. Lord forgive them for they know not what they do. It was some political satire which again I am not sure of the wording. What does it suggest? Julia, saviour? or Julia, sacrificed at the hands of brutal men?
We discussed this here over the weekend. One thing is for sure I am once again convicted that we are too reticent in voicing our "intolerance" for the rubbishing of our faith and our God.
My daughter was telling us that a friend of ours (about 20) had said in his Face Book status, "Come along to ......................Church and find out about the real meaning of Easter/" She was upset at the rude and derogatory remarks this young man received from some so-called" friends". She also said she should have commented instead of just liking his post. This led us to conclude that we all need to speak out more ourselves and be more supportive of steadfast believers who are being persecuted, even in small ways. I am proud of that youth standing and speaking for the Lord.
.
*Julia Gillard is the Prime Minister of Australia.
* Our family does not celebrate Easter, although we do remember Jesus death and rejoice in His resurrection every Lord's Day. Neither do we use representations of Christ in keeping with the second commandment, which adds to my extreme agitation at these poor attempts at humour.
By God's grace, let us attempt to live out our Christian walk with all fear and reverence due to God alone.
