The Big Week

Not a single thing of interest or consequence has happened since last I posted.
Not a single thought of any depth or edification is coming to mind :-)
I am totally in holiday mode!

The holidays have been fabulous and I feel at last some of the exhaustion
of the past year has lifted. (sigh)

This week hubby and I celebrated our twenty sixth wedding anniversary
with a nice dinner out and some time for reflection and quiet.

I have read and enjoyed "War Horse" and now look forward to seeing the movie.

I have had a great day today on my birthday!

Tomorrow we will spend time with other family at the coast
and I imagine we will see the New Year in very quietly.

Little sister and two year old crashed out on a rainy afternoon.

Little two year old fallen asleep at the door waiting for Mummy to return.
Snavelled one of the babies bottles and set guard on the door.
Little darling fell asleep right there!

Homeward bound.
Love this pic of my crew.

2011 has been a very challenging year with many highs and equally as many lows.

May God bless all who read here in the coming year as we look to him
who is our fortress, and our strength.

Emmanuel - God with us!

in·car·na·tion/ˌinkärˈnāSHən/

Noun:
  1. A person who embodies in the flesh a deity, spirit, or abstract quality: "Rama was Vishnu's incarnation on earth".
  2. (in Christian theology) The embodiment of God the Son in human flesh as Jesus Christ.
As Christians that fact, that wonderful event,  is marvelous to us who believe and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ!  God in human flesh!

Q. 22. How did Christ, being the Son of God, become man?
A. Christ, the Son of God, became man, by taking to himself a true body and a reasonable soul, being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost in the womb of the virgin Mary, and born of her, yet without sin.  (Westminster Shorter Catechism)

That God has so great a love for His people that He, the Creator and Sustainer of all the earth, came down from Heaven's Glory and took on a body, weak and frail like ours. Fully God, fully man. A great mystery which we hold in awesome wonder as Truth.
This great event, amazing as it is, is termed Christ's humiliation. Stooping down to his creatures. Looking with determination and obedience to the Cross where on He would die a gruesome death for the sins of many.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism says in
Q. 27. Wherein did Christ's humiliation consist?
A. Christ's humiliation consisted in his being born, and that in a low condition, made under the law, undergoing the miseries of this life, the wrath of God, and the cursed death of the cross; in being buried, and continuing under the power of death for a time.
 .

So while we do not celebrate this momentous event in time in any religious or traditional way at this time of year, we do solemnly ponder it and give praise and thanks to God for it all the time.  Neither do we celebrate the OT feasts which foreshadowed different aspects of Christ's attributes and works, yet we learn much from the reading and studying of these God given feasts days, about our Lord and Saviour and His promises to us, His covenant people.

I will be your God, you will be my people.

We instead celebrate the Exaltation of Christ every Lord's Day. He is Risen...Alleluia!

Again Westminster Shorter Catechism
Q. 28. Wherein consists Christ's exaltation?
A. Christ's exaltation consists in his rising again from the dead on the third day, in ascending up into heaven, in sitting at the right hand of God the Father, and in coming to judge the world at the last day.
.
Many Christians praise and honour God at this time in a special way. The Incarnation, the coming to earth of the Lord Jesus is truly to be remembered on every day as we walk this pilgrimage.  The world, sadly, has taken a pinch of this glorious and miraculous event and made it into something "worldly". The silly season. A time when few are focusing on the Incarnation
at all.

This year, with the 25th falling on a Sunday, the Lord's Day will see little of true worship of our great God. Let us keep our eyes upon Jesus and His blood shed to save sinners, such as us, and not solely upon a baby lying in a manger . Let us rejoice in the victorious exaltation of our Lord who stedfastly completed the work which he came to do.

Let us with expectation wait upon His triumphal return!
Come Quickly Lord Jesus!

I will lift my eyes unto the hills
From whence cometh my help.

F Troop

There's a funny story of how we came to watching old black and white F-troop DVDs this week.

Our neighbour has recently given birth to a baby boy and named him........Forrest. We have no room to talk when it comes to unusual names but, well, we cannot help but feel for the sweet little baby who will one day be a young man and have to deal with "Run, Forrest, Run!" and "Life is like a box of chocolates"  all his life.  We wish him well and hope that he is brilliant, and a good runner :-)

His name,, apart from reminding me of Forrest Gump, also jogged a memory of the actor Forrest Tucker who played Sergent O"Rourke in F-Troop.  Now we happen to have a couple of old DVDs from the first series of F-Troop and dug them out.  Despite everyone having seen them before we loved them all over again and the fact that they are black and white just added to the fun!  Apparently the subsequent series were in colour, but I don't remember that as we only had a black and white TV way back then. (Late 60s)  How we laughed then with Mum and Dad and all of us kids loving that time slot.  You remember?  The Ghost and Mrs Muir, My Favourite Martian, Dad's Army ah, the good ol' days!

Hubby ended up hiring a few more from the Video store so we have had a feast of them.  Very politically incorrect weren't they!!??  I wonder if any American reader could tell me whether these type of shows are now frowned on in the US "seeing as how" poor  old Chief Wild Eagle and the Hekawis are often the brunt of the slapstick comedy.  Would indigenous Aussies have a problem with such a portrayal?

( We have a number of quite bad movies etc from the early days of TV which probably don't get aired these days.  I vaguely remember seeing the movie "Jedda" as a child but can only seem to recall the scene where Jedda jumps? is thrown? from a cliff.  I recently saw Gnarla Kunoth (Rosalie Kunoth-Monks) who starred as Jedda in that 1955 movie on a television program.  She is a leader among the Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory, and clearly does not think her people are in any different situation now to then. "Jedda" of course is not a satire like F-Troop and portrays life in that part of Australia as it was for both the indigenous people and white settlers  Rosalie did not regret making the movie.)

So what have you all been doing so far on the holidays?  Aussie homeschoolers will mostly be on a break though I realise that the Northern Hemisphere is still in full swing.
We have been relaxing, done a little visiting, been to the pool, had a few visitors, done lots of washing (a few rainy days here amid the heat).  I am really enjoying the grandchildren at the moment with no school lessons to interfere with the important stuff.  Two year old fronts up regularly with books in hand and says "Tory Time?" I am loving reading with the grandies as much as ever I did with my own.
To conclude, a wise old Hekawi saying. " When Mumma gets tired, Mumma ain't happy, whole household not happy."

So this little Mumma had better head off for the evening. Ready for bed? You can betcha a bucket of buzzards I am!

Love those old F troop lines.  They get a laugh every time!

Arggggggggrrrrrr...........a two year old in the house!

He may be almost new but my little two year grandson is keeping our household on red alert!
Why is it that the cheekiest, most mischievious ones are also the cutest and cuddliest ones?

The little man received this bike for his birthday yesterday and within minutes was stunt riding, standing on the seat, doing wheelies and crashing into everything in sight ~ including his six month old twin siblings who are now motoring around on the floor.
How can we resist when he says things like "Torry" and "Tory time" !
Love that little guy.

Good times!  Good times!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

He may be made from snips and snails
but he is just adorable

The Ideal Location to Homeschool

Sometimes I feel very sympathetic towards home school families who are isolated or pretty much the only family in their area/ church taking on the challenge.  Internet contact is great but nothing replaces face to face friendships and advice.

From a small group of maybe half a dozen families twenty years ago, we have ballooned into a very active, motivated and dedicated group in Central Queensland,  involving over one hundred students and their families.  We have many organised activities including sports, swimming and educational excursions.  We have informal nights out for mothers which are great when new to homeschooling mums need encouragement and advice.  We have the opportunity to mentor younger mothers and sometimes  share lessons, as a few friends and I did with the Art a couple of years ago.  The high schoolers have an end of year dinner to celebrate the graduation of Year Twelves.

So here are some pics of some of the crowd who showed up at our Break Up Day this year.
Mums, Dads, students, some past graduates and friends etc.  You may notice the brave, super -  cool,  foolish few at the pool bare chested.  Believe me that is not the savvy thing to do in our climate. Central Queensland has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.  Don't let that put you off if you are thinking of moving here.   Most people in our group cover up for modesty and major sun protection!

(One of) The Best Days of the Year!

The final day of school!!

Happily for my  zealous , enthusiastic,  somewhat  reluctant students, our Breakup Day was brought forward from Friday to Wednesday.  Since I, and they, would find it very difficult to work after the big break up party we are calling it quits for 2011.  Despite my frequent whingy mentions of lack of work accomplished and failure to motive blah, blah, blah we have finished off quite nicely.  The boys and I have even done a little bit of clearing and dumping (groan) in our school room.  It has been a very tiring year, and full of ups and downs so we are hoping to have a good rest plus some major clean up days over the break.
~ A girl can dream ~

In 2012, Lord willing, my youngest will begin his high school years and we, our twentieth year in home education. Phew, it is a marathon isn't it!  So, dare I toss out even more accumulated stuff? Most homeschoolers I know have nearly as many books as the local library and I was heading that way until the major haul out which I posted about here, back in 2009. Since then I have restrained myself from buying except what has been essential to their work and we've utilized the library a lot more.  It is a practical matter for me.  Much as I love books and the wonders they hold, I do not have a skerrick of storage space, my homeschooling days are drawing to a close, my children are not the voracious readers that hubby and I were, and ..........  well, I do not want to leave this job until I am gone and it is lumped on the family.

Breaking up Day has such golden memories for me as a child.  What special traditions did you have for that occasion?  Watermelon, novelty races, plums and apricots in our goodies bags.  I just don't know that kids these days are so excited about fruit for a treat.  I may be wrong?  It was always hot but everyone, parents, students , teachers and towns folk all came to the Break up day festivities, in the good 'ol days!

As a group our families have tried many different type of end of year events.  You may remember the tour of the local caves in 2008 and the sand castle competition at the beach in '09.  Some years we've organised treasure hunts, done the old fashioned egg and spoon and three legged races and played lots of cricket.

This year it is a little simpler.  We are meeting at the pool and the children will have some inflatables and lots of friends to laugh away the special day.  I'm glad that is a relaxed, non organised, sort of event :-) I am looking forward to catching up with friends who I seem to have missed over this past busy year.

Birth Days

Birthdays come and go fairly regularly here.  Happily, we still make a fuss about the day and today was no different.  My older son's fourteenth birthday.  You can read his birth story on other birthday posts here and here.

Looking cool in Canberra!

Much loved uncle.

Today I have been reflecting on the special-ness of each child's birth.  It is a day to celebrate and remember for them, but especially precious to the mother and father, but particularly I think mothers.  I try to make mention of each of my siblings birthdays to Mum and a special point to remember the birth of my sister who died.  Her birthday is very precious to my mother as is my own little son's who did not live long enough to mark his age in years but days only.

The birth days of my children are THE most special days of my life.  Now that I have grand children, I look forward to a day when I can recount to them the excitement and anxieties of their birth days.

He has set the solitary in families!

My own four children and the little grandchildren.  Since these six are all born within three years of each other it will not be long until they are almost like sextuplets!  And note the sweet little girl on the right ♥
I hope this happy snap makes you smile ~ it sure does me!

Giving Thanks!

Yes, I am still mooching about my friends leaving, about not enough school work done to show for this year, about the lack of improvement in my general health.  It seems that where I am now may be as good as I am going to get and that takes quite a bit of acceptance.  Previously, when I have had health traumas I have bounced back quickly in spirit even when the body has been lagging, but this time, I am pretty sluggish all round :- (

I have such sweet and gracious commenters ♥  Thanks for your encouragement earlier in the week and continuing prayers.

Being Thanksgiving Day in the US, it is a good opportunity to list some of the many things I have to be thankful for and there are sooooo many!

* I am thankful for a generally sunny disposition.  I do get down, stressed and melancholy but never for long. Laughter is the best medicine and a merry heart helps to dispel most situations and brings a little sunshine to others as well.

I am thankful for friends, both in real life and on the blog, who are tender and thoughtful towards me and others when it is needed.  Funny thing is that lately I think I have expressed more in my blog than in real life simply because I am almost entirely house bound at present.

*My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (and this is really top of my list!)  Once again, I can say, He is faithful and His mercies are new every morning.

*The three little babies born into our family this year. If you are wondering why I haven't been posting pics it is not lack of enthusiasm.   It is a problem with my loading device. Promise some photos as soon as that is remedied.
(Have pinched a couple for this post.  Ain't they sweet )

*For the Groves Presentation Night last night.  The great staff from Groves always seem to encourage both children and parents in our homeschooling journey.  It was just what I needed to re-boot a little enthusiasm into the end of this year and look forward with some excitement to the year ahead.

Psalm 100
4Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Her Price is Far Above Rubies

This year seems to have been filled with momentous events both joyful and sad.
Today two special friends of mine are leaving town and my heart, which has been heavy with many worries and sorrows lately, is very melancholy.
Since my blog is a record of the highs and lows of my life, I could not let the departure of these beloved friends pass without mention.  In fact this woman has had numerous mentions in the past, though not by name, especially in my early days of blogging and in reference to Titus 2 teaching.  What a wonderful, friend and councillor she has been, speaking the truth in love and leading by example.  She had her failings, and would be the first to admit it, but she has a great capacity for generosity and hospitality which has endeared her to the brethren here and will be her mark that is left behind.

This is the testimony that I would like to leave behind.
A Godly Proverbs 31 woman, A teacher of all things good as per Titus 2, a mother in Israel.
Farewell and God speed. ♥

Shakespeare at my feet.

It's almost the end of term and I would love to be able to enumerate for you all the wonderful achievements for the year.  I wish I could say we are finishing off on a high note and studying the Bard, or performing him.

The reality is we are chugging along, hoping to finish before mid-December.  We are all feeling the effects of a stressful year which has presented many challenges.  We are also beginning to feel the notorious Rockhampton humidity which arrives just after the heat to stifle the breathe out of you and sap away the energy.

The honorable William Shakespeare, at least my lovely fat copy of his complete works, is at this very moment lodged under one side of my office chair!  Argh, wash my mouth out with soap!  That thick volume was the nearest book I could find, sufficient to hold me up when the wheel broke off and I was about to use the computer just now.  Ah, how the mighty have fallen.

I would prefer to say I am leaning on God's Word but could not stoop so low as to use that sacred book in such a fashion.

I am finding little time for reading or writing blog posts but it seems that many are in the same boat as I am missing some of my regular favourite reading places and not seeing a lot of comments when I do post.  These are the cycles and seasons of the internet no doubt, just as in our own real lives.  One thing I really want to do is catch up with friends on this holidays.  Busy lives make that very difficult.

The strange upside to the deaths and funerals in our family recently has been an unusually long amount of time to spend with relatives.  With the two funerals just two days apart many travelled and stayed, making it possible to see one another more than the usual few moments at a service.

I often thank God for the marvellous blessing of a great family.  This has been brought home to me very forcefully these last few weeks.  I am so thankful, proud and happy to come from such good stock!  Of course we have our skeletons....and then there is me :-(  but a finer bunch of people one couldn't hope for in their family.

Trisha commented on my last post about the good family stories I have recorded for my children and later generations.  If the Lord tarries, this is my hope.  To continue to record as much first hand family history as I can.

Have a great week!

Ephesian 2:3-5
3Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

We will not forget....

"They will  grow not old,
as we who are left grow old........"

This Remembrance Day, we remember and honour not only those who gave their lives that we might live, those who age did not weary, nor the world condemn, but I am also mindful of the many who returned and built our nation through hard work, commitment, loyalty to God and country. The ones who did grow old.

Since last year's Remembrance Day the two remaining veterans of our family have passed away. Only at his funeral last week did I learn of one uncle's wounding and gallantry medal.  These were men who did their duty and came home keeping much of the memories they held to themselves.  Though he was military in his running of "the ship" this man was one of the most loving, affectionate and communicative of his gender that I have had the privilege to know.  He was my mother's brother.

My father has also lost a brother this last year.  (Both men were ninety.)  This uncle was the family historian and he has passed really valuable information and photographs to me as one who wishes to take up this mantle.

Though I am proud to have these men as my ancestors along with my beloved grandfather who fought in the Great War, I am also thankful to God that I do not have loved ones who were involved in later conflicts, nor any of the young folk in our family currently serving in conflicts.  I pray for the three who are training with the Navy at this time.  God Bless them and Australia.

Lest we Forget

Ecclesiastes 3

1To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up
   that which is planted;
 3A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
 4A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
 5A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
   a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
 6A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
 7A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

God grant me the wisdom and grace to know the times
 and the seasons.

Theodore's Got Talent!

For your listening pleasure.

Two wonderful young people with a heap of talent from the tiny Central Queensland town of Theodore.  This is an interview with Steve Austin on ABC radio from the Hotel Theodore.  It includes three songs and two are written by Joe.

Forgive me if I seem excited, but these two are each children of cousins of mine.  Their dads are cousins and the mothers were sisters!  This is why I feel at liberty to correct the spelling of
Shontel's name.
Joe being quite a bit older has been singing around the district for a lot of years, many with his talented parents who had a dance band and now solo.  Shontel is only sixteen but seems to have been performing a long time, too.
(The pair also sang at their Great Uncle and Grandfather's funeral yesterday.)

A Time to Mourn

Thank you for all the prayers and thoughts posted after my last blog.

Of course we are sad at the loss of this loved one, but not so heartbroken as his wife and children.  Such a shock.  So unexpected.  We are trying to support them in every way possible knowing that only time will really heal.  My cousin is a strong woman and her adult children will be a wonderful support for her over the long haul.

That same night, Thursday, our Uncle passed away.  He was ninety and it was not unexpected but still it is painful when loved ones pass.  This Uncle was a very special gentleman, loved as the patriach on my mother's side of the family. I have written a little about him and his family in The Other Relies and the Boxing Day Bash and he is pictured here at our family reunion  (in 2009)  with my mother, now the only remaining member of their family.

To add to the sadness, my cousin who lost her husband, and her three brothers, lost their own father when they were small children.  She was four.  This uncle was a father figure to them, his brother's children.  It will be a draining week of funerals for us all but also a time to share precious memories and family legends will be born and retold.

The cycle of life, birth to death, is but a fleeting one.  It reminds me to redeem each day and use it profitably for the Lord, never knowing when our own time may come.  To love and teach my children and their children.  To search my heart and keep my eyes on the Lord and to use each day for his glory.

A Time to Laugh

Amidst all that has been happening, we enjoyed the much anticipated visit of our friends from the Gold Coast.  These are the good friends who left town about eighteen months ago.  Their boys and ours have kept up weekly phone contact, Facebook, emails and they have been fortunate enough to visit them on two occasions down there.
What a delight to see old friends reunited.  It has been fantastic for my boys!  We are all a little melancholy tonight on parting but a whole day swimming and sliding at the local water park has contributed to that!

Having these special friends around as well as the very active and entertaining youngsters of our household has been a balm to soothe our troubled thoughts.

Have a good week, one and all.

Not the Post I had Planned

Death comes unexpectedly.

This morning we lost a friend  and my cousin lost her husband.  He was fifty four years old.
The realities of life and death are upon us this day as we ponder this jovial and well loved relative taken so young.  This cousin has been close to me all our lives.  Their children, though more distantly related, have played with ours and her youngest son is one of our boys best mates.  We are all stunned.

As I spoke to her earlier I marvelled at the strength that is given in times like these.  I was proud of my boys talking on the phone to their cuz/ mate and the understanding they showed.  They said he just wanted to speak normally to someone.

I always struggle at times like these with my beliefs which differ from many of those closest to me.  My comfort is in knowing that the Judge of all the earth does right.  It is in God's hands, whose infinite wisdom and justice are always true and altogether righteous.

It is a time for us to reflect on our own stance before God and whether we are ready to meet our maker.

Right now my heart aches for my dear cousin, her children and grandchildren, her dear mother-in-law.

Stand by Me

I loved this when a friend posted it on Face Book some time ago.  Just re-visited it in my drafts and thought I would share it with you all. Very stirring and catchy, hey there are really only three words to learn! With an occasional verse thrown in  here and there. I particularly love the South African group but really enjoyed the whole thing.

Have a really great week everyone!

Through My Mothers Eyes

A few years before this photograph was taken (1967) my mother suffered a bout of encephalitis which made her dangerously ill and left her with some brain damage, namely memory loss. I was only 12 months old at the time so I do not have recollection of any of this.

My two eldest sisters went to boarding school from 1964 and so it was that mum decided to keep a diary.  That way she had a record of events to base her letters to the boarders on.  What fabulous newsy letters they were!  In my years away at school mum's dependable missives were my life line to the goings on at my beloved and much missed home.

My parents are now on a waiting list to move from their independent living unit in a Retirement Village to hostel care.  It is looking like the move will take place early next year.  They are pottering around and sifting through their belongings which have already been severely pruned moving from the marital home of 50 years, then from their retirement house in town and soon, from their cosy little unit.

Mum's diaries have become legendary!
They began as the jottings of a busy mother of many.  Little reminders on the run of who she had seen, where they had been, births, deaths and marriage. Facts.  From these humble beginnings grew the copious writings of a woman through almost fifty years of  great joys and deep sorrows, loneliness, frustration, exhilaration and every other emotion imaginable.

Mum has been reading through her life - she has little memory of many of the people and events recorded. She asked me if I wanted to read them and perhaps hold on to them for others who may wish to do so.  Therefore, I have become the "Keeper of the Journals".

I had not read right through them.  I have scanned some dates and events but I ran it by the rest of the crew, suggesting I just store these precious books until dear Mum has passed away.  They are a wonderful source of eye witness information and hold the most unbelievable details not only of our own lives but the happenings of our little rural community and of our large extended families. While the early years are short notes made by a busy wife and mother some of the latter years are heartbreakingly detailed and frank.  These are the years of adult and teenage children, bad decisions, boarding school, illnesses,  losing parents and a child.  These are the years where Mum, due to the encephalitis, began to suffer epileptic seizures and eventually handed in her license.  An empty nester with a still hard working husband and no means of getting out from the farm except with others.  A devoted wife, mother and grandmother who sacrificed much and at times was lonely and uncertain but constantly called upon God for his aide.  (And being RC many other celestial beings!) My mother's devotion to her religion and piety is very evident throughout all of her writing and the many quotes and clips included in her diaries.

It is the possible hurts which may be resurrected which lead me to want to protect these documents.  I do not think it is necessary to bring up old wounds which have long been forgotten, among loved ones.  There is so much to rejoice  and reminisce over.  So much love poured out in those pages.  So many little details of long ago events which we may one day appreciate when that little bit of information is required.  When did grandma die?  Who was bitten by a red back spider?  Who almost missed the wedding and why? How did Mum feel about my becoming a christian? About grandchildren? about our choices in life?

Dad has also weeded out his belongings including his farm diaries, some of which he passed on my brother still on the home block.  There was one particular year book which had a lot of empty pages and he suggested I take it and use them up.  The year was 1997, in which Dad was involved in a fatal accident and almost lost his own life.  Very little is recorded from that date onward. However, I flicked to 29 November and the entry read "*Ruby* had a son".

It is amusing to me because it so clearly shows the contrast in my parents.  Mums entry concerning the birth of this son is pages long, detailed, and continues over several days!  It has been at the same time revealing, heartwarming to read these tomes over which our mother poured over for many hours at the dining table of the old house but also heart breaking.  I yearn to have those conversations over again, to have recognised my mother's pain and have told her how much she is loved and admired.

I have never kept a journal for any length of time, saving this blog.  I am pleased now to have this record, which having been read by many unknown "friends" gives a glimpse into our life with all its joys and sorrows without naming and harming people.  I have tried to write a positive blog.  I have tried to convey some of my spiritual thoughts along with very mundane day to day happenings.

When my decendants visit "Mumma's Place" in years to come I hope they will know a little of me.  Since I have blogged quite often about my Mum and Dad, I hope they will discern the great love and affection I have for these two precious people.

Making Golden Memories

My own childhood holds
I love nothing more than to see the little ones enjoying making memories, too.

We have limited income and a lot of children around, so most of our
memorable occasions are not fancy or far flung.
We just enjoy being together, watching the babies develop,
celebrating the milestones of life and
being a part of these special little lives..

My second grandson turned three on the weekend.
What a happy, exciting day for a small boy

Full of barbecue, cake and party food.
One big uncle, one small nephew.
(GS 3 almost two)

You can read about my own Golden Childhood from old posts
here if you are interested
in what makes Ruby the peculiar person she is today!
My parents didn't have much money, either.  They didn't
enjoy the luxury of travel.
They worked hard and made many special memories along the way.
Whether they intended to, I'm uncertain.
I think it was more just how life flowed and as an adult I have that happy,
glass half full knack of being able to remember the good times fondly
and not focus on the bad.

I hope my children, and my children's children, will do the same.

Enjoy a wonderful week.

Friday - Love it!

I consider it a great accomplishment to get to Friday, virtually unscathed.
Today is my GS2s third birthday, more on that next week I am sure :-)

A hug and a big thank you to all who commented on my last post.  I wasn't down but I was down on myself.  It was good to be reminded  that so many of you are day dreamers, that day dreaming isn't bad in itself.  It was good to be encouraged that we not only need to read the Bible to keep our focus in the right direction.  We need to search the scriptures daily calling upon the Holy Spirit, to study them, meditate upon them and live them.  Our Lord Jesus Christ really is captivating!

My once "eclectic" blog seems to have whittled down to health dramas and grandchildren.  All a huge part of my life but perhaps not so interesting to others.  I chuckle sometimes that I might know that one of blog friends is out picnicking or sitting through rehearsals, or going on a road trip but I have not spoken to my in-real-life friends for weeks! It is the season of my life where home and family are taking up a vast amount of my time.  I love that ♥  I confess that I do miss my coffees with the girls a little.

My hubby and I are trying to make more opportunities to go out on our own.  It is very hard to have a conversation with so many people in the house.....especially little people ♥  Hectic as it is we see the benefits to our young grandchildren and our daughter at this time of their lives.  For us, it is just so precious to watch the littlies grow and develop and to be so close and important in their young lives.

School and home schooling activities fill most of our week.  My two boys met with their supervising teacher last week and we were all very encouraged.  Our teacher was especially impressed with the improvement in the boys reading.  So while academic book work has been a little scrappy this year other areas have developed naturally.  After the all-too-brief break we are back to swimming training, basketball and more seriously, Speech Pathology sessions.

But the end of year is in sight!

This sight tickled me as I left our Homeschool group's
choir practice the other day!
Definitely more than 1.8 children in these families.
The line continued to the right and represented almost every
6 to 14 seater on the market!

Lo, Children are a heritage from the Lord!

Every Thought Captive

2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV)
“ Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;"

How often we let our minds run on with vain imaginations, often distorting the plain reality of a situation and blowing it up out of all proportion.
I think this is one of the good reasons God created man and woman.  Men do not seem so prone to this. What about you sisters?  Do you have days where from the time you get up in the morning, that first coffee, that first peek at the emails, blogs, news updates, you find yourself day dreaming.  Using precious time in airy fairy useless waffle?
This happens to me ..... a lot.

Taking every thought captive?

Philippians 4

8Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Brief, but this is my line of thought at the moment.
Have a great week, bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Overjoyed!

I am over the moon with joy!

Well, it is nowhere near as exciting as the arrival
of our new grandson!
He is gorgeous isn't he?
And so is my beautiful girl!

It is not as enjoyable as watching "the twins" grow!
But hey, it gave me a buzz.
It seems I am once again able to comment using my Blogger
profile!
After successfully commenting using the name/ url option for some weeks, I then lost that as well and was feeling a little frustrated by the whole thing.  I couldn't even comment on my own blog when I was signed in :-(
I'm happy to be back!
To all the friends who I have not been able to comment, I hope to get there soon.

It doesn't take much to make me happy!

Cardiac Rehab

The Lord gave me a new heart back in 1985.
He turned my stony heart into flesh and quickened it!
Praise God!

"For you hath he quickened who were dead in
trespasses and sins."

It is now eight years since my first heart attack and
seven since the second and my triple by-pass operation.
Twice Freed!

I am very thankful to the Lord for that most momentous of events in my life,
the day that I recognised my need of salvation and found it in the
Lord Jesus Christ.

I am also very thankful for that day in October 2004 when  a
very kind and dedicated surgeon, Dr Hart, was enabled to perform
a by-pass where others had declined to try.
While we long to be with our Lord in Heaven he gives us earthly ties
as well.  I am blessed to have been able to watch my children
grow and more recently to see their children enter the world.

During my recent hospitalization, I had a minor heart event and so I am
now attending a Cardiac Rehabilitation program.
I attended the Education side of this back in '04 but hearing
all the information again is useful.
Also the program has been extended to include 10 one hour gym sessions.
This is new territory for me but everything is tailored to suit each patient.
Just as our spiritual lives need discipline, education and training,
so also we need these to maintain physical and mental well being.

The staff kindly fitted me into the sessions over the school holidays
so that I would not have to use up 3 hours,
two mornings a week for five weeks during the term.
This has worked out well in that sense but has really consumed a
lot of the break and I have not been able to do many of the much needed
projects  here at home, nor spend the time with my family
that I might have otherwise.
We have all coped though and I have really benefited and
enjoyed the sessions.

Having the medical history that I have :- (
and remembering the dramas I had in having my children :- (
I am praising God and marvelling at the healthy family I have
and that my daughters have both had problem free
pregnancies and births.

Brothers.
Gorgeous grandsons 2 & 5!

He sets the solitary in families!

Back to school this week and glad to report that I am feeling much better.
I am looking forward to the term and looking ahead to the long
break at the end of the year.

Enjoy your week!

Allow me to introduce

the newest addition to our family!!

My younger daughter's little son
at 8 hours of age.

After a copy book labour ie. pains begin around 10pm , waters break, get the baby sitter
(my older son), head to the hospital.
This beautiful little boy was delivered at 2.56am this morning without complication.
They are at home now and both Mum and Bub are great!

God has graciously blessed us with six grand children.
I marvel that they are all so beautifully formed, healthy and loved.
Thank you Lord for this precious child.
Whatever hardship befall us they are more than compensated by the
good gifts bestowed on us.

Looking and Longing

It is always sad when someone passes away.  Sad for their families and those of us who are left. But when a believer dies there is joy in knowing they have gone to the Lord.

Psalm 116
15 "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints."

Recently a friend of ours passed over to Glory!

She was a friend through being in-law to some of our good friends, but we had known and spent time with her over the last 26 years.   A godly woman, very hospitable, open, outspoken.  She was a woman  who joyed to go to His house  (Psalm 122) and she beheld how good and pleasant it was to meet with the brethren (Psalm 133). Her chief end was to glorify God. *"Maria" had suffered chronic illness all that time with Lupus and associated problems but was finally taken by cancer.  She was in her early fifties and left a husband, four children and several grandchildren.

*"Maria's" funeral service was a beautiful simple worship service and her Pastor, a friend since childhood, conducted it.  His own wife had been brought to Christ through "Maria's" witness  and friendship.  He preached from Joshua chapter 3 - the beautiful picture of the Israelites passing through the river Jordan on dry land  as the priests stood holding the Ark of the Covenant, and into the Promised Land..    Sign.....how touching, encouraging and attention getting that picture is.  It was a beautiful gospel message of hope in Christ for the unbelievers there and brought a sense of longing for our Promised Land  to all believers.

Psalm 130
5I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
6My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.
7Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.

One of the things which both moved and convicted me about "Maria" was the wonderful testimony she left.  In her final weeks of life I was also in hospital in Brisbane and her Pastor, whom I know, came to visit me.  He was able to share the beautiful way in which "Maria" was clinging to Christ through pain and fear.  She knew that even now, Christ could heal her and restore her earthly body, but she trusted that He would do all things well for her, his child, even if it was to receive her into glory and leave her earthly ties.

Psalm 48
14 "For this God is our God, for ever and ever.  He will be our guide, even unto death."

1 Samuel 3
18 "It is the Lord, let him do what seemeth him good."

Also, her children and everyone close to her - family, christian friends, unsaved co-workers - all spoke highly of her love of the Lord, her family and her concern for lost souls.  Her children, all adults now, were able to tell of the many years which she had endured pain, fatigue and stresses and yet never complained or over burdened them either physically or emotionally.  This spoke a lot to me in my own circumstances. Often we put on a brave face to the outside but what impression are we leaving with our families?

1 Timothy 6:6
"But Godliness with contentment is great gain."

Seeking help, accepting offers are all good and neccessary. I know that we need to let people know where we need the help, but "Maria" seems to have managed to do all that and yet not whinge and complain.     A marvellous work of Grace in her life. Would that we could all die with such a testimony to the abundant blessings of God on us, who once were lost.

Proverbs 31

10Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Westminster Shorter Catechism

Q. 37. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at death?
A. The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness, and do immediately pass into glory; and their bodies, being still united to Christ, do rest in their graves till the resurrection

"Maria" ........
Resting in the grave till the Resurrection

* Not her real name.
